About our Butters

Butters can be best described as a boy in a dog-suit. He was really eager as a puppy to learn from us and loved to do training activities for his meals. By 10 weeks old, I had almost run out of basic things to teach him as he had mastered all of the regular commands. He was and still is my constant shadow and will follow me to the bathroom, to the bedroom and to work. For my husband and myself who had just moved to California, we struggled as adults to meet like-minded people and the Doodle Community welcomed us with open arms.

We were suddenly invited to doodle events, meet-ups, people’s houses and to doggy birthday parties. Everywhere we went people would approach us and tell us how beautiful our dog is (to the point where I think it got to Butters’ head). He is a confident and proud dog and has a naughty streak a mile long. He will tell you with his eyes, body language and his barks exactly what he wants when he wants it. He will steal our favorite pair of socks just so we chase him around the house and he will be the first one to sample any treat or any new toy we bring home. We did everything with him and even got him his own puppy, Bagel, whom he was so gentle and kind with and taught her all he knew.

When COVID hit, both my husband and I were furloughed and we used the opportunity to take week-long camping trips to the National and State parks all across the West Coast. Being in the mountains, with snow, on kayaks, curling up next to us at the fire or under the stars, we trusted them to watch our backs, be adaptable to new situations and be careful traversing the landscape not to damage nature or chase critters. Butters is always up for any adventure we want to go on and it's easy to bring them to places because he is well-behaved and gentle around all humans. His joy is infectious and makes me grateful I can provide him the best life a dog could live.

Both Butters and Bagel have traveled across the country moving our home from California to Florida and now our mountain-dogs are just as happy being beach-dogs! They have learned to surf, canoe and have become therapy dogs for children in hospitals and the elderly.

Finally COVID came knocking on our door, Butters did not leave my side for days on end. He slept peacefully on the bed, not demanding to be played with or exercised. He just knew what I needed and I will appreciate that for the rest of my life. He has become a favorite of all of my family and friends for his giant “hugs” and I am grateful he chose me to be his person.

Dogs' lives are so short and luckily Butters can tell time so he will let me know when I've done enough work for the day and has created his own schedule so that I can focus on a work-life balance. I don't and won't take any single day with him for granted. He is my Heart Dog, my Soul-dog and I would love nothing more than to share that experience with you and yours!
